Regardless of the famous video games FALLOUT is based on, my expectations for this new series were extremely low. The biggest compliment I can give to the first season is that once I started binging the eight episodes, I couldn’t stop.
Outside of the captivating performances in FALLOUT, the real reason to watch is how creators Geneva Robertson-Dworet (CAPTAIN MARVEL) and Graham Wagner (SILICON VALLEY) handle the world-building. Rather than have things be overly mysterious, they reveal their cards at the right pace. This allows for FALLOUT to be more accessible than, say, THE LAST OF US (still the best video game adaptation of all time).
My biggest complaint about FALLOUT has more to do with Prime Video than the show. For some idiotic reason, the premium version has a zillion fade-to-blacks to allow for commercial breaks on the advertising plan options. A fade-to-black separates each scene in FALLOUT, which sometimes makes the show feel like network TV. Note to Amazon: Unless this style is a meta choice to mock video game load times, there’s no excuse to do this in 2024.
Even with that nit, FALLOUT is still a journey through the Wasteland that audiences will want to leave the comfort of their vaults to enjoy.
It’s available on Prime Video.
