ÉTOILE is a brilliant, lightning-fast series about the exciting world of ballet, but don’t let that influence you from watching. It is drama with a flair. It contains hilariously funny dialogue. It is sexy, lusty, and gossipy. AND, it is filled with incredible, stunning, breathtaking dance moments. I was sad after I binge-watched the series. I wanted more.
ÉTOILE is half in French and English. I use English AD, so I don’t have to try to read the closed caption quickly. The series title translates into the word “bull.” This double meaning involves all the dialogues firing away at viewers and an actual bull incident. No spoilers will be revealed.
The dance production numbers are sublime. Trust me, it will feel like audience members are enrolled in the classes or performing at the two most prominent ballet companies in Paris and New York. I felt like I had to shower after one of their workouts. It is a complicated, competitive community, and it is fabulous to pretend to stand at the bar and plié.
The creators, writers, and directors are well-known and highly competent since they created THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL. Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino are extraordinary at mixing comedy and drama with pizazz. Their creativity keeps the story fresh, bold, honest, and wildly intense.
The ÉTOILE ensemble is brilliant. I am in awe of Cheyenne’s dance and acting abilities. Her emotions are spewed nonstop. She is both enchanting and stubborn. Her stories are sheer perfection. Jack and Genevieve are the foundation, and their outburst are magical. Nickolas is a hoot, and Crispin is a fabulous, wealthy villain of sorts. The entire cast can dance your ass off while still being true to their characters. They are all larger than life yet feel so grounded and authentic. It’s amazing.
ÉTOILE surprised me. I did not expect to fall in love with this series and connect to these ballet companies. There were moments of truth spoken about this profession. It gave me pause as to how dedicated a dancer must be to achieve success and stardom. I am looking forward to immersing myself in another season when it returns. The show is so much more than “just dancing.” It is a slice of life, whether you call Paris, New York, or any other city in the world your home.
ÉTOILE is streaming on Prime Video.
