ENGLISH TEACHER is at its best when exploring the deeper, more serious issues of high school education. Recently, two installments gave viewers examples of mediocre writing and a powerful look at todayโs reality.ย
Episode three was fluffy and lightweight. Yes, it was humorous and cringeworthy at all the AP intervals. Evan (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is sheer perfection when it comes to timing and getting caught in uncomfortable predicaments. His character has a huge imagination when it comes to going beyond normal, commonsense boundaries.
Episode four was current and fresh, showcasing the various sides to gun control, guns being allowed on campus, and training teachers on how to use guns. It explored all these opposing opinions with honest bantering and rapid-fire dialogues. It was an amazing discussion that should be a part of every schoolโs agenda in our country. Humor was highlighted, but it did not distract. This was no easy task. Kudos to all.
ENGLISH TEACHER has a fine line to walk among and through. I am hoping it finds its rhythm. There are infinite stories that need to be told with humor and authenticity wrapped tightly together.
It is streaming on Hulu.
