CREATURE COMMANDOS S1 REVIEW 🤩

I don’t want to jump the “Gunn,” but we are in for a treat if this is what audiences get from James Gunn’s DCU. Gunn has a way of turning comedic situations into tragic ones. This golden touch has worked for him with PEACEMAKER, where he made the titular jerk character into an empathetic protagonist and did so to out-of-this-world success with everyone’s favorite misfits – the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In CREATURE COMMANDOS, he kicks off his DCU, and there are a few non-spoiler lessons learned for the fans:

  1. No one is safe. Major comic book characters will be killed off, and I’m hoping it isn’t MCU-style BS where they come back in other forms.
  2. Creative Control. Gunn’s style, editing, and pace are displayed in every episode. There’s at least one action scene in an episode with an obscure rock/pop song blasting to spectacular effect.
  3. Bloody-as-hell. The style of CREATURE COMMANDOS is more in tune with THE BOYS than any of the PG-13 superhero films fans might be used to. And it’s all the better for it.

CREATURE COMMANDOS made me care for a group of lovable misfits. I never thought I’d laugh so hard at Frankenstein’s misfortunes (voiced to serious comedic perfection by David Harbour) nor care so much for a Weasel. It’s ridiculous cartoon fun.

The entire first season is available on Max.
