The pairing of director Pamela Adlon (BETTER THINGS) and writer/star Ilana Glazer (BROAD CITY) is a comedic match made in heaven. Outside of DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, BABES is easily the funniest movie so far in 2024. Oh, and it’s also raunchy, sweet, and shockingly honest.
Not many films delve into lifelong women friendships that dip into parenting. And when there are, they tend to be situational comedies with one character having a baby while the other is in a supportive role. With BABES, Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau play the protagonists who undergo life-altering changes in their parenthood journies. And the film is that much better for making them relatably human.
Outside of the touching moments of friendship and parenting, this film is downright hilarious. It has the heart of THE BIG SICK, the friendship of GIRLS TRIP, and the comedy of any Judd Apatow-produced comedy (TRAINWRECK/THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN). And despite having a similar vibe to films audiences have seen, it has a fresh feel thanks to Pamela Adlon’s natural directing style.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed BABES. It won’t win any awards this year, but it will make you laugh and possibly shed a tear or two.
It’s available to rent on most VOD services.
