ATLAS is a fast-paced action sci-fi film that features Jennifer Lopez in an unlikely battle against artificial intelligence. It is intense, bloody, and “breathy” as the battles commence. It demands absolute trust, which is very difficult to give freely with the number of plotholes at every corner.
ATLAS piqued my interest in futuristic scenarios. I thoroughly enjoy a good, space film if only they could have gotten the year correct with the possibility of all the weaponry, travel, and AI intelligence. It was too far-fetched, yet it does ring true about the “Do no harm” theme for all robots.
Sterling K. Brown was underused as an actor. What a waste of his acting chops. Gregory James has the most calming voice. I loved his quirky intonation and cussing. He was built as the comic relief. Simu Liu as Harlan was not scary enough for the final scenes. J.Lo ruled this film in every frame, but even she could not rescue herself from the script.
HOW I SEE IT…For the visually impaired, ATLAS is a nightmare. The lightning-fast fights didn’t register while watching. Not all of us can decipher who is who especially against a gray backdrop and an ionic whip weapon thrashing everywhere. It was extremely difficult to catch it coming. This made the entire experience not as enjoyable as it could have been.
ATLAS was simply a movie that was hedging its success on JLo keeping everyone interested. Even though l am a fan, it just did not maintain my solid interest. Better writing, and brighter, more in-depth CGI. It was a shame. It coulda, woulda, shoulda. It is streaming on Netflix.
