For 58 years, this holiday classic has remained a staple in our Christmas special lineup. And it’s easy to understand why. Charlie Brown took on the system and reminded folks that commercialism and consumerism are the true enemies of Christmas.
Even those who are strictly opposed to the imposition of religious beliefs can’t possibly look at this pure-hearted Christmas classic with any sort of derision or contempt. And that’s simply because of how good it is.
Equal parts hilarious, nostalgic, and sweet to its core, Charlie Brown’s quest to save a tiny and frail Christmas tree despite the protests of his peers served as a reminder of why we love the Peanuts gang and their stories so very much to this day. And that’s because they are true underdog stories. During those times that we feel embarrassed, inadequate, or sometimes lost, we can turn to good old Chuck as a reminder to never give up, to always do what’s right, and to always fight for the little guy.
It’s also a reminder that sometimes, the little things in life matter most. And that there is beauty in simplicity, especially during the holiday season. What matters most to the people around us is the spirit of love, sacrifice, and kindness. That’s what Christmas is all about. Charlie Brown and Linus have known that for a lifetime. And I’m glad the message is still being heard to this day.
