YOUTH premiered with two episodes exploring the topic of single women of a certain age who are venturing into the dating world while facing empty nest syndrome, and the possibility of menopause not far off in the future. It is led by the comedic acting skills of Sharon Horgan as Alex. She is the glue that holds the plot together, sharing and demonstrating huge emotional arcs.
As a woman of a certain age, I can validate the writer’s choice of topics that usually don’t see the light of day. It is rare to witness a woman going through so many life upheavals that would normally force anyone to their knees while tapping out. Women’s aging issues have been the elephant in the room. As the years pass for me, I make it a point to be brutally honest about what I am dealing with, as well as asking pointed, specific questions. Most women have a lot to say. We have been quiet far too long. The writers get this, and are opening up conversations in a humorous, honest, and authentic manner. It is all very refreshing.
I do have to add that so far I adore the man trying to be a part of Alex’s life, and I would also change the locks so her son is forced to make better choices. All of this is just my opinion coming from a different place with more aging years behind me. I am so interested to see where viewers are led as we take this journey with Alex. Obviously, I will continue watching YOUTH. I hope you will join me as it streams on HBO MAX. Women must have a clear-cut answer to Alex’s question… Can women be sexy after 60?
