Ah, love is in the air on UNITED STATES OF AL. At least, that is what Al (Adhir Kalyan) believes, but there are many differences between couple relationships in Afghanistan and America.
The plot line is simple. Ariana (Azita Ghanizada) wants to take it slow. She is still dating more than one person. She would like to check out everything about Al. “People are like a package, and it is her responsibility to check out the good and the bad.” Al does not agree. He believes they have a lifetime to learn about each other. She wants him to be patient. This is easier said than done for Al.
The writers made sure the dialogue was not too sappy, ending up with a fast-paced romantic episode. All I can say, it was not a deep story. It was sweet, and held hope for the future.
There was also a subplot about Hazel, Riley’s (Parker Young) daughter caught cheating in school. I am not sure why this event and the consequences were linked together. Seemed out of place.
UNITED STATES OF AL still has not reached its peak of the season opener. I am still waiting to be pulled back into that intensity. Maybe next week…
