This black exploitation sci-fi genre film has an inspiring premise, a fantastic cast, and just enough originality to make it kinda worth your time. What’s missing in this smartly written feature is a consistent tone and empathy.
I love seeing Boots Riley’s (SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, and I’M A VIRGO) cinematic style creating a new genre of films. They are a cross between Terry Gilliam, Spike Lee, and Charlie Kauffman. And THEY CLONED TYRONE pays homage to those while adding the black exploitation elements I mentioned above.
If you’re looking for something original to watch and can deal with the flaws of this feature, I recommend it. Despite it having the word “cloned” in the title, it feels highly original.
