In the spirit of the Richard Linklater classic, WAKING LIFE comes this year’s Oscar winner for Best Animated Short Film. And it’s a stunning, experimental, insightful poem on love.
The question, “what is love,” is the central theme for a series of scenes, capturing the indescribable immersion of love. I may not be able to define what love is in words, but I can gush that I’m in love with this short.
I was unfamiliar with Alberto Mielgo’s work before THE WINDSHIELD WIPER, but now I’ve been obsessing over it. I’ve seen countless meet-cutes in film, but there is something beautifully tragic in Mielgo’s animation.
THE WINDSHIELD WIPER is a slow burn that may not be for everyone. However, if you make it to the end, the final two minutes are some of the best you’ll see this year. So, if “love is a secret society,” I’m happy to spoil the secret and share my love for THE WINDSHIELD WIPER.Â
