THE SYMPATHIZER S1E1-2 🤩

HBO and A24’s (what a collaboration!!!) new series THE SYMPATHIZER, by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, kicks off with an impressive first two episodes. So far, it’s a faithful adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The series masterfully blends genres—combining elements of a spy thriller, historical fiction, and dark comedy—creating a rich, compelling, and humorous story. It revolves around a CIA-affiliated spy and communist who is secretly reporting back to the Viet Cong.

The show is bolstered by its impressive cast – Hoa Xuande is the charismatic and complex Captain, while Robert Downey Jr. showcases his range in multiple roles (slightly confusing and a little distracting, but I dig it). Sandra Oh and Toan Le round out the cast, with Le’s portrayal of the General being particularly excellent. Fred Nguyen also shines as Bon, the Captain’s “blood brother”.

Visually stunning and narratively engaging, the series has a cinematic feel, especially evident in the intense first episode DEATH WISH, continuing in GOOD LITTLE ASIAN. And for fans of OLDBOY, there’s a very different, yet maybe equally iconic squid scene. I’m so excited for the rest of this season.

THE SYMPATHIZER is now available on Max, with a new episode every Sunday.
