It’s a great week for family-friendly related entertainment with the release of this and the new Disney Animation film, RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON. I’ve been a fan of Spongebob the character for many years and was happy to see that Nickelodeon is continuing to bring him to screens big and small after the tragic passing of his creator in late 2018.

The new Spongebob film may not break any streaming records, but it’s a whimsical adventure for fans of all ages and to put it simply: It’s really funny. The fantastic guest voices include Matt Berry (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS) perfectly cast as the ego-centric King Poseidon, Awkwafina (pulling double duty this week with her role in RAYA), and the always loveable Keanu Reeves as a sage bush that guides Spongebob and Patrick on their journey. SPONGEBOB does meta-jokes better than most other children’s content, save for ANIMANIACS, and there’s no shortage of them here.

Following up the popular TV series and two earlier features, this new film is the first to use CGI instead of 2-D animation and it works perfectly as some scenes cut rapidly between live-action and the animated citizens of Bikini Bottom. There are a few scenes that may be scary to very young viewers, so parents should probably watch along with kids 7 & under.

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN is currently streaming on Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access).
