THE PROM is an unabashedly show-stopper traditional musical. It will not be everyone’s cup of “Indiana lemonade” as the narrative flow is uneven at times. But for those that love musicals, this is one that you will want come out to dance to.
It is delightful to see the musical talent on display. James Corden takes Carpool Karaoke out of the car. Nicole Kidman adds a bit of “Zazz.” Andrew Rannells captures his BOOK OF MORMON spirit. And the she-can-do-nothing wrong Meryl Streep stretches her vocal range making it about her and ‘Not About You.”
Yet, the show is stolen by Keegen-Michael Key and newcomer Ellen Pellman. Key brilliantly identifies with why we love musicals in his rendition of “We Look to You.” Pellman instantly becomes the heart and soul of the film through the touching “Just Breath, Emma” and “Unruly Heart.”
If you are looking for a film that captures Broadway as the escape for “when reality goes to scary new extremes and the answer to each problem is to burst into song,” you can do no wrong by singing and dancing (and crying) along to THE PROM.
Enjoy the show on Netflix this weekend. 🎭
