THE PIANO LESSON 🤩

THE PIANO LESSON takes August Wilson’s prolific words from the page to the screen, thanks partly to Denzel Washington’s production company. Even though nepotism is afoot, it is beautifully directed, filmed, and especially acted through the efforts of a fine ensemble.

The story’s nuances are difficult to recreate, but THE PIANO LESSON succeeds because of the brilliant Danielle Deadwyler as Berniece and John David Washington as Boy Willie. Their highly emotional journeys were genius. Their quiet stillness matched the intentions of every outburst. Their angst grabbed my soul, and they would not let go. Their performances were matched magnificently with the extraordinary Ray Fisher, Corey Hawkins, Michael Potts, and Samuel L. Jackson. Their entwined moments were perfect, especially when sitting around the dining table. It was like returning to the Deep South, revisiting times most wish never happened and too often forget they did.

The cinematography had the power to lift the boundaries of time. It was impossible to turn away. The director, Malcolm Washington, knew where he was, guiding his audiences with class and grace.

THE PIANO LESSON deserves your attention and time, especially due to Deadwyler’s stellar acting skills. August Wilson’s words will stay within your heart like a ghost long after the credits are gone.

THE PIANO LESSON is streaming on Netflix.
