THE OTHER 🤩

THE OTHER is playing at the Spokane Jewish Film Festival, and I had the opportunity to see an early look. Here’s my spoiler-free take:

THE OTHER is a documentary film that offers a deep, thoughtful look at the situation between Israel and Palestine from 2017 to 2024. It is filmed in English, Arabic, and Hebrew and includes subtitles when necessary. The producing team used interviews from both sides of the age-old conflict, engaging in discussions with activists and neighborhood residents living their lives in constant turmoil. It was an honest depiction of what was happening in the Middle East before and after October 7th. Their truths are what made NO OTHER powerful.

What made THE OTHER so amazing was the sheer volume of authentic commentary, ensuring both sides were represented. We heard the horror of war’s ravages from every perspective. We listened to Israeli and Palestinian opinions that covered their fears about their future. It was evident that there was agreement. They were adamant. It must stop. Peace agreements are the only answer to be able to live as one. The film was candid and gave viewers glimmers of hope if we all listen. It was a significant moment.

What added to the strength of this film was the Q & A discussion after with a member of the cast in Israel and a Palestinian zooming from both New York and Israel. Their comments were enlightening and educational. They were able to add additional points of view that the audience greatly appreciated. It was a compelling evening to say the least.

THE OTHER and the live discussion united the festivalgoers. It brought us together in ways I never saw coming. This is what filmmaking is all about, especially within intimate settings. Kudos.
