THE ELECTRIC STATE was a “shoulda, woulda, coulda” movie experience. On the one hand, it featured many major stars and character actors, and on the other side, audiences were guided through two hours of forgettable storytelling. This dystopian sci-fi, action-adventure showcasing cartoonish AI, robots, and drones simply got lost while trying to save and destroy humanity. More empathy and, yes, even humor were necessary to nail this convoluted tale.Â
The thing is, I wanted to love this film. Who doesn’t enjoy Chris Pratt (GUARDIANS IF THE GALAXY) as your space hero? But Pratt never did find his usual funny moments in between the battles for survival. I was disappointed. Then, Millie Bobby Brown (STRANGER THINGS) tried to elicit sympathetic family feelings that never quite reached high enough for viewers to care. And please tell me, who created both of their looks? I think hair and make-up needed a duo makeover.Â
The CGI robots were sometimes cute, and the supporting cast included amazing, talented actors such as Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, Holly Hunter, Stanley Tucci, and Jason Alexander. Yet, most of the film left audiences in the cold, reimagined graphic novel (of the same title) exploring the crazy 90s.Â
THE ELECTRIC STATE had big ideas and big money thrown their way. Too bad it wasn’t put to better use.
It is streaming on NETFLIX.Â
