THE BEAR S5 REVIEW 🤩

Aaron and Esta sat down to talk through the final season of THE BEAR. No spoilers, just two people who didn’t want it to end.

ESTA: THE BEAR’s final fifth season gave fans exactly what they have been wanting since season three ended. The behind-the-scenes restaurant action was more intense, even though each character toned down their rhetoric and usual barrage of loud obscenities.

AARON: That’s the thing that hit me right away. The kitchen stopped yelling and started listening. For five seasons, “every second counts” hung on that wall as almost a threat. This season, it became a promise.

ESTA: This season invited audiences to peel back the character’s hidden layer of doubt, bravado, and insecurities while shining that spotlight strong and steady. It was pure genius. Each look of despair and despondency was visible and palpable with every far-off stare and extra breath taken. Nothing was rushed. It was a slow-cooker ride, simmering in the beginning and then straight to a sweet roller coaster that never flipped upside down. Kudos to the writers and the entire brilliant ensemble of actors. I also have to mention the tight reins the directors held. No one was ever so out of control that they couldn’t be reeled back in within a split second. For me, S2, S1, and S5 are all tied for the best. They are all so good.

AARON: If I’m ranking the whole run, I stand by season two as the peak, and I’ll admit seasons three and four tested my patience with their music montages and repeated themes. My honest take: three and four should have been one tight season. Combine them, cut the fat, and audiences arrive at this fifth-season hook without the slog. THE BEAR earned its ending, but it made us wait an extra year to get there.

ESTA: Fair. What stood out most to me during this final season is the growth and maturity we, as viewers, witnessed in every cast member. It wasn’t just Carmy, Richie, Syd, Tina, Natalie, and Marcus exploding. Enriched, full-bodied, emotional arcs were evident everywhere. Everyone had a moment, so that when the credits rolled at the end, we would know that no one was giving up. Rather, everyone was moving forward, continually being present for each other, while still choosing to do what brought joy into their own lives. These are fine, hard-to-learn lessons to put into action that most of us will never master. What a glorious roadmap, bookmarked with reaching for the stars.

AARON: One line landed for me, Mom. When Marcus says, “We let anxiety set limits on emotion, on feelings, on grief. and we trick ourselves into thinking there’s limits because of fear.” Anybody who has ever talked themselves out of a feeling because it seemed too big knows exactly what that means. The show spent five seasons proving the point. These people kept shrinking their own lives to fit their fear, and this season, they stopped. That’s the growth you’re talking about, and it’s why the ending feels so well-earned.

ESTA: I adored episode seven. It was like watching a Broadway play, “PUTTING IT TOGETHER.” The timing and pacing were superb. But I also thoroughly enjoyed episodes six and eight because of the intricate setup and the magical wonder of every piece firmly placed in a concluding position. THE BEAR’s strength is in the simmering of its imaginative recipes, creating a beautifully plated ‘sauce’ that will nourish and endure.

AARON: Same for me! Episode seven, Caramel, no contest, is the best. It’s the sweetest episode the show plated this season. I also loved E8’s score swelling at the end, which reminded me of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS score in a good way.

AARON: One more thing I loved: the SAY ANYTHING poster tucked on the wall down in the basement. That’s my favorite film of all time, so catching it there felt like the show reaching back and shaking my hand. SAY ANYTHING is about betting everything on the people you love and trusting they’ll show up. That’s the spot-on theme of S5.

ESTA: So, where does that leave us?

AARON: We spent five seasons in that kitchen together, and the best part was never our own plate. It was watching everyone else score with theirs. That’s the group hug this show serves us. And… we’re both walking away full.
