The buzz of the three-episode premiere of THE AFTERPARTY is starting to wear off. Without a bit more “chardonnay,” it’s looking like this series is going to walk, not run to the finish line in the good, not great category. Don’t get me wrong, there are some hilarious bits like a “Sound of Music fight,” but it’s not enough to sustain 30+ minutes of TV.
Unlike ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING, there isn’t a sense of danger for the lead characters. Without any threat, the relationship between Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Zoe (Zoë Chao) keeps me coming back weekly to listen to their perfect mix CD.Â
This past week, I appreciated the high school teen comedy spoofs, but I wanted more. Christopher Miller is an expert in this genre, and I’m still hoping he can stick the landing better than Xavier (Dave Franco) did from his balcony.
It’s available on Apple TV+.
