The hilarious genre mash-up, THE AFTERPARTY, is a whodunnit mystery that’s part ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING combined with the zaniness of Phil Lord/Christopher Miller (THE LEGO MOVIE, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, 21 JUMP STREET, and so much more). The show is set during a high school reunion where several characters get a second shot.

Episodes one and three are the strongest of the bunch. Yet, the MVP so far is Yasper (Ben Schwartz). Each episode of THE AFTERPARTY is structured around one character’s version of what happened during a murder. Yasper’s retelling is a musical with a HAMILTON spoof that’s instantly singable. It’s so catchy that his songs have replaced WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO in my head for a few nights.

The second MVP is Aniq (Sam Richardson). I’ve been a fan of his work since he first appeared on VEEP. I’m glad he’s getting his chance to shine as the lovable nerd still pinning after the one that got away in high school. “He didn’t just have chemistry with her. He actually had chemistry… class.”

It’s a damn shame that more people won’t watch THE AFTERPARTY. Unfortunately, the show is stuck “Three Dots From Stardom” because it’s on Apple TV+. But hey, if what Yasper sings is true, maybe this show will get “one shot, twice” and catch on. If not, I will continue to enjoy it and say, “Yeah, Sure, Whatever” to anyone that misses out on what’s shaping out to be one of the best comedies of the year.

The first three episodes of THE AFTERPARTY are available on Apple TV+.
