Let me preface by saying that Iâm probably not the target audience for LEGO STAR WARS TERRIFYING TALES. That aside, I found TERRIFYING TALES to be, overall, a fun weeknight watch. As an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) and a STAR WARS fan, I was intrigued. The 45-minute special consists of three stories told by VaneĂ©, a former assistant to Darth Vader, to Poe Dameron and BB-8.
First, the good stuff. This special plays out kind of like Marvelâs WHAT IFâŠWe witness the origin story of Kylo Ren, a battle between Darth Maul and General Grevious, and what wouldâve happened if Luke joined the Imperial Academy. These stories are fun â and a tiny bit spooky. These are pretty obviously not part of the STAR WARS canon, but when you consider the impressive STAR WARS: VISIONS, that matters less now. This works as a Halloween special, but in case you were forgetting, Poe Dameron dons a skeleton suit towards the end to remind you. Also, there are some great references to horror films, and the marketing for this movie involves parodies on the aforementioned movie posters featuring LEGO Star Wars characters.
Now, the biggest negative of TERRIFYING TALES is that it doesnât utilize its LEGO world enough. What made THE LEGO MOVIE so great is that the characters were self-aware that they were building blocks. There are a few hairpieces that fall off here and there, but overall, it doesnât even matter that the characters are toys. This couldâve been animated differently, and 90% of the jokes wouldâve still worked.
