SWEET MAGNOLIAS S5 REVIEW 😊

SWEET MAGNOLIAS presented its fifth season of life in Serenity, South Carolina. A fictional town filled with an inspiring community that cares about its neighbors, families, and friends. The series has always been about faith, hope, and love. This season is no different. Some might say it is way too sweet, combining every monologue and conversation with one positive affirmation after another. I would agree, but that is the charm and lure of this Southern town. There will always be peaks and valleys to overcome in life, and this dramatic, romantic soap opera has definitely found its place among the noise and turmoil of our current society. After all, it has five seasons under its belt. The writers and actors know what viewers want to see and feel in their hearts as they watch.

SWEET MAGNOLIAS’ success rests on three lifelong friends who have helped each other weather the storms and celebrate joyous moments. Margarita night is a sacred tradition for Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen. Their bond is powerful and enduring. I am sure many fans dream of always having someone in their corner, offering unconditional love, no matter what the obstacle. And I must say, the adversity and joy each woman faces daily are believable, since the scripts are fresh and current, with topics we all want to explore.

Each episode explodes with emotional arcs for every character. The advice these three ladies continually share is always perfect. Nothing knocks them down. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are a force to be reckoned with, and everyone who lives in Serenity acknowledges this fact. There are tons of subplots as well as several lusty, PG love scenes.  Boyfriends, husbands, and girlfriends are given their proper time and attention. Does all of this seem unrealistic? Perhaps, but somehow all this goodness plays out against each problem even while serving up amazing food, brownies, and cocktails. It is a wonder none of us gain five extra pounds or have a hangover while watching.

SWEET MAGNOLIAS ended with several paths to explore in season six. I have no doubt it will return at some point. I binged all ten episodes. Don’t ask me why. Maybe I secretly enjoy saccharine-filled shows. Actually, I think it is because the characters and I have been through so much together over the years. I guess I have their backs as much as they have mine.

SWEET MAGNOLIAS is streaming on Netflix.
