This week’s episode of DOGS goes to the dog house, aka a teenage rehabilitation center, as “Cheese” (Lane Factor) does a little bit of time. STAY GOLD CHEESY BOY plays like a lighthearted version of Destin Daniel Cretton’s (SHANG -CHI) little-seen film, SHORT TERM 12.
Also ramping up this week is the hilarious performance of Marc Maron (GLOW) playing the counselor, Gene. I’m not sure how much of his performance is improv versus scripted, but watching him try to shape young men at the underfunded center was comedic gold.
Let’s get back to Cheese. His character is a bit smarter than the rest of the troubled teens, as he lives by the philosophy of “treat others the way they want to be treated.” Or, as one character states, “like you’re from a white girl’s Instagram. This juxtaposition works since Cheese has positive relationships with the police officers on the reservation, whereas the other kids do not. That advantage allows him to understand people and provides a warmhearted protagonist for the audience to root for.
Pack your #FreeCheese t-shirts and enjoy one of the best episodes of DOGS yet.
It’s available on Hulu FX.
