REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES is a loving tribute to lost souls everywhere, whether human or not. It is based upon the best-selling novel by Shelby Van Pelt. It was written and capably directed by Olivia Newman. (WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING) The film has been much anticipated and immersed in media hype for weeks. It is not disappointing. Newman created a gentle, quiet, warm look at grief, family, and friendship.ย
The success of the film resides in the talent and acting skills of two-time Oscar winner Sally Field. (NORMA RAE, PLACES IN THE HEART) At almost eighty, sheโs still got it. She makes her relationships with an octopus named Marcellus (voiced by Alfred Molina) and a stranded young man, Cam (Lewis Pullman, of TOP GUN MAVERICK fame), believable and authentically natural. Her look is exactly what you would expect of a woman who has lived alone for decades, and adds to the affirmation, โWhat you see is what you get.โ Together, this stubborn trio forges a bond that unites them forever.
It is a surprising, sad road of discovery and exploring the past while trying to find peace, solitude, and love. It works brilliantly and delivers a heartfelt conclusion, threading the fascinating story together in ways only the powers of the universe can manipulate and fully understand. It is sweet entertainment wrapped in layers of learning how to let go to move on. It is truly a rewarding journey.
A bonus is all the cinematography of the underwater creatures. I learned so much and felt more at ease while watching their rhythmic motions. It was mesmerizing and lulling, except for that nasty eel. There are predators everywhere. I have also put touching an Octopus on my bucket list. Those tentacles are not as scary anymore. This film gave me added respect for all water-based species.
REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES is a lovely film that the entire family can enjoy together. It reinforces the importance of doing things โthe right wayโ; we will reap rewards never foreseen. It is a film about healing and finding your home, whether immersed in the ocean floor or in a small village. My final thought is to keep some Kleenex handy. You are welcome.ย
