I recently finished reading the book, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, after seeing the film version on screen. I wanted to compare the two and see which sections followed the author Shelby Van Pelt’s writing. I thought I would prefer one more than the other, but I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel just as much as the movie for different reasons.
The novel gave readers a much more in-depth view of the characters. Their personalities had softer edges than on celluloid. I believe this is because it is easier to introduce people within descriptive, background paragraphs. A book can be as long as necessary, while a film must show audiences this info through conflict and resolution, all while facing a basic time limit. There are far more challenges in deciding what is necessary to be true to the story. Sometimes it becomes imperative to change a character’s personality.
This was done to both Tova and Cam (Marcellus, the Octopus, remained the same, although he received even more attention and screen time in the movie). Tova (Sally Field) and Cam (Lewis Pullman) bristled, whined, and complained on screen. They were fun to watch and made the conclusion so much more delightful as they grew and morphed. The book took its time, and yet the ending got readers to the same blissful place.
The film version highlighted the supporting characters more prominently. There were more locations that came alive visually. The book also showed the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. It was just as explosive within our imaginations, but also much more subtle. Both worked extremely well. I enjoyed having a clear visual of Tova’s friends as well as the gorgeous scenery. All of this detail made the story pop and become memorable.
Sometimes, a film version of a beloved book can ruin the entire experience. You will hear people say, ”Oh, the book was far better.” REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES was successful in botmediams. This is a huge triumph in itself, and I don’t think it matters which one is first. They complement each other completely and will offer fans a lovely escape rich with poignant, heartwarming moments to savor all summer long.
