With READY PLAYER ONE, Spielberg does his best to imitate James Cameron’s filmmaking style and adapts the ultimate nerd-culture bible to the big-screen.
In the process, he removes any semblance of empathy – creating an empty caloric popcorn experience stuffed to the brim with jaw-dropping VFX, quick one-liners and an extremely clever use of 80’s nostalgia.
Will fans (me included) of the book be upset with this adaptation? Nope.
Will this push VR a step closer to mass-adoption? Nope.
Will audiences remember anything they’ve seen upon leaving the theatre? Nope (except for one sequence that I dare not spoil).
Will you be entertained? YES.
