There’s a lot of PLATONIC that I’ve found relatable, but SAN DIEGO is too far-fetched, even for a comedy. Many successful tv comedies take things we may take for granted in life and turn them on their head or amps them up for laughs. I understand that Will (Seth Rogan) and Syliva (Rose Byrne) are the leads here, but this week’s episode forces them both into a situation that no one would really ever find themselves in.Â
I’ve taken a lot of business trips. I’ve traveled out of state and also around SoCal to visit clients and vendors. And on some occasions, I’ve even brought friends and dates to things planned through work. But those things were sporting events, concerts, dinners, or parties. They weren’t VERY IMPORTANT business meetings that could make or break my career. SAN DIEGO shoehorns Sylvia and her friend Katie (Carla Gallo) into a business trip for the brewery, and hijinks ensue.Â
PLATONIC wanted to take an opportunity to show that Will is such a good friend to Sylvia that he wouldn’t do business with a sexual predator. We should hope our protagonist is the type of person who would do this based on everything we know about him so far. But the fact remains that Sylivia’s character was put in an unnecessary situation and used to further Will’s character development. Syliva can and does hold her own, but developing a plot point where Will has to be her “white knight” while no one else sticks up for her, didn’t work for me. It showed Katie wasn’t a good friend to her and that all of Will’s colleagues are basically just assholes. In one episode, a show undoes a bunch of character development for everyone but Will to make sure we, the audience, know how good of a guy he is.Â
With just two episodes left this season, I’m unsure where PLATONIC is going. After her disastrous return to work, Sylvia isn’t any further along than when we met her. Will’s now more ostracized from his business partners than ever. At first, we were led to believe he was part of the issue; a non-compromising partner that doesn’t see the trees through the forest. After SAN DIEGO, it’s nearly impossible to see how he could trust his team again.
PLATONIC streams every Wednesday on APPLETV+. Â
