NIRVANA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is one wild time-travel ride, and I’m still dizzy in the best way. The brilliance of Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol is that they somehow fold footage from their old web series into a silly, self-referential feature film, making the seams part of the joke.
The movie soars when it pokes fun at 2008 and how hopelessly tangled Jay and Matt’s worlds are, whether they like it or not. One particularly hilarious sequence has the characters in a movie theater watching THE HANGOVER. In 2026, the language in that film would leave audiences not laughing, but in a 2008 world, they laugh at hateful words. This works so well because the audience gets to see just how far our sense of humor has evolved. That is, until SCARY MOVIE destroyed it this year. 🤮
Final Thought: Whether you’ve binged the TV series or are meeting Jay and Matt for the first time, NIRVANA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is instantly likeable and packed with moments you won’t soon forget.
