MERCY is a conundrum. On Rotten Tomatoes, it is a suspenseful, nail-biting narrative that delivers an unexpected ending and has a score of 82%.ย On the other hand, RT critics panned the series, giving it just a 25% score. Hmm. I stand with the people on this one. It was exciting, extremely fast-paced, and got my heart pumping for Chris Pratt, who played Chris Raven, an angry, on-the-edge Police Detective.ย
Some would argue that they missed the usual fanfare from Pratt (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, JURASSIC WORLD) who plays everyoneโs good guy hero. Still, I rather enjoyed his time-driven terror and confusion as he tried to prove his innocence. His range blew me away, and I was hooked until the final countdown. He is pitted against Rebecca Ferguson (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN) as Judge Maddox. Her character was the total opposite of Raven’s. I marveled at how she kept herself so cool and level-headed. I wanted to throw objects at her throughout their verbal discourse and battles. โFacts are black and white. Truth is gray.โย
The director, Timor Bekmambetov (THE NIGHT AGENT), kept a tight rein on this dystopian plot. It raises questions about how our system attains justice for all,ย
and it scared the crap out of me thinking about what could be coming in the near future.ย
MERCY is streaming on Prime Video.ย
