M3GAN 🤩

Watching M3GAN was one of the most fun times I’ve had in a movie theater. Even though the movie had been out for a week, and I watched it on a weeknight, the theater was pretty full, adding to the charm of the Blumhouse film.

I love movies centered around artificial intelligence – EX MACHINA is one of my favorite films of all time, and AFTER YANG is one of my favorites of the past year. M3GAN, maybe surprisingly, fits in neatly with those movies, bringing perspective from another genre to join the sci-fi thriller and slice-of-life drama of those, respectively. I just wouldn’t have predicted that a horror comedy would work so well. M3GAN has some disturbing scenes, but the movie leans into its absurdity in the right moments, resulting in a perfectly balanced of laughing and tension. Like those other excellent movies, M3GAN also provides unique commentary to the ever-relevant discourse on AI.

Another reason M3GAN works is thanks to Allison Williams (from GIRLS and GET OUT), who shines as the aunt of Cady (Violet McGraw), who does just as well in her role. Their characters’ relationship is central to the emotional payoff of the movie. Plus, as a cherry on top, M3GAN takes place in Seattle!

M3GAN is now playing in theaters.
