To use the word, ‘Impresario’ would not do David justice. This American Masters documentary, now available on Netflix, follows David’s remarkable life from unremarkable beginnings as the son of a seamstress in Brooklyn to one of the most powerful and influential producers of our time. ‘Producer’ is the operative word here because David excelled at the one talent that makes a producer great – recognizing talent.
David got into the music business while still a teenager and soon found out that he was very adept at the art of the deal. He discovered brilliant rock artists like Jackson Browne and managed the careers of so many rock gods and goddesses that his Asylum Records was a hit machine for decades. David is often honest and even unflattering of himself and his drive for success, much of which is corroborated by some very famous musicians.
And then there his foray into Broadway and, of course, films, as the ‘G’ in Dreamworks ‘SKG’ studios. His political influence is only briefly touched upon, but one can’t help feel that his boy from Brooklyn was indeed a kingmaker.
Now on Netflix, In INVENTING DAVID GEFFEN, only David could have invented his legend.
