If you’ve spent enough time in Los Angeles to know the struggles of parking and chasing big dreams, I LOVE LA will feel like it gets you. This cringe-comedy was created by and stars Rachel Sennott as Maia, a talent agent with a group of friends who feel straight out of ENTOURAGE.
Speaking from experience, I’ve worked in the entertainment industry and met plenty of people like the ones in I LOVE LA. The show is all about chasing status and keeping up momentum. It might not be relatable for everyone, but it’s perfect for anyone who dreams about making it in LA. The funniest part for me was how much Maia reminded me of my ex-girlfriend. She’s ambitious, self-absorbed, and somehow manages to be both confident and needy. One moment you’re laughing, and the next you’re wondering what’s happening. I could totally relate to the boyfriend character (played by Josh Hutcherson) and what he deals with in Season 1, which made the show even more addictive for me.
I LOVE LA does a great job using pop culture and turning it into fast, clever jokes. It’s a bit like SHRINKING, except each character has their own unique voice. The real standouts are Jordan Firstman as Charlie and True Whitaker as Alani. Firstman’s sarcasm is always funny, and it pairs well with Whitaker, who has the funniest role in the show. Her sharp comments about BABE versus BABE: PIG IN THE CITY in the season finale had me lol’ing.
Final thought: I LOVE LA is an easy show to binge and offers a sharp, messy, and charming look at ambitious women trying to succeed in Los Angeles. I might be a little biased, but all audiences should be able to enjoy it. Just watch out for Elijah Wood along the way.
The entire first season is available on HBO Max.
