HACKS was still in bickering mode between the two leading ladies, Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder). I’m not sure we could call the weekend a true retreat, trying to balance grudges and an impossible truce. The writing was biting and sarcastic every step of the way.
I love a good verbal brawl as well as the next person, but I do wonder if this revengeful repartee will be it for the season. I miss the softer moments. It provided an interesting contrast between Deborah and Ava’s personalities. The addition of cast members was a plus. I hope there is even more insight into who they are as the weeks progress.
Returning to Las Vegas was a smart, creative move. The writing for Late Night could take place anywhere and forced the most important question: “How do they get America to go to bed” with Deborah Vance? Hmmm… now that would be a funny bit to watch.
HACKS is keeping the series fresh and bitchy. It’s packed with high-stakes moments. The frenzy feeling was palpable, and of course, WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS… well, you know the rest.
HACKS is streaming on MAX.
