FERRARI 😊

Despite being a weird character study mixed with a thrilling race climax, Michael Mann’s latest movie has just enough horsepower to make it across the finish line.

FERRARI is a biopic based on one year in the life of Enzo (Adam Driver) and Laura Ferrari (Penélope Cruz). Sadly, the movie doesn’t cover as much racing as audiences will want by limiting the focal point to that short of a time. In that period, though, Mann strangely casts many non-Italian actors to play Italians to mixed effect. This might rub some people the wrong way since the accents don’t always work, and it’s not as authentic as the film could’ve been. Yet, the bigger issue in FERRARI is that despite being a movie with soap opera-like dramatic moments, none of them made me feel much of anything… outside of when it was on the track.

And yes, the scenes on the racing track are as hyped as they should be. The last thirty minutes of this movie alone are worth checking out. If you don’t know the true story it’s based on, like myself, it will only make it even more enthralling.

Michael Mann is a gifted filmmaker. With FERRARI, he’s made a semi-exciting biopic that won’t win first place at the Oscar race this year, but it’s good enough to be mentioned thanks to Penélope Cruz and those racing scenes.

It’s available in theatres now.
