I was worried that FEAR STREET PART THREE would suffer from going too far into the past, ala BACK TO THE FUTURE III, but man, oh man, was I wrong! The stunning conclusion to this horror trilogy makes the sum of all the parts worth watching.
With these three slasher horror films, director, Leigh Janiak, has officially become the “it” filmmaker to watch in 2021. She masterfully goes between genres in all three films. PART ONE is your traditional 90s slasher flick with a bit of comedy sprinkled in. PART TWO gets darker and less comedic as it’s bound to the ax that Tommy wields. Lastly, PART THREE goes full-on period piece. It has suspenseful classic horror that mixes a thrilling rated R STRANGER THINGS like 90s conclusion. The tonal and genre-defying mix across the trilogy creates a perfect mash-up for old and new audiences to dive into this bloody pulp universe.
The theme of all three films is simple – don’t be afraid of things that are different, and entitlement can be deadly in the wrong hands. Those themes play out in various gory ways in each part. Yet, with some help from the Konami cheat code, the good protagonists might be “up, up” to the challenge.
All three parts are available for must-watch late-night viewing on Netflix.
