The ENGLISH TEACHER made me realize how glad I am that I am a retired teacher. Yes, the opening two episodes gave all the right reasons teachers do what they do for so little pay. The massive emotional rewards were mentioned several times. I get it. Believe me, I do, but times have changed. Students and teachers are not the same verbally as they were a few years ago. This opened the door for energetic, crazy entertainment as viewers are invited to listen to the ensemble lament their daily drama traumas with colorful context and gusto.
Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is at the center. He represents by portraying a gay ENGLISH TEACHER in Austin, Texas. He is the type who is learning to go “full out” while he is constantly getting called into the principal’s office. Learning those fine lines of how to manipulate the system will be the source of many future scripts. He is surrounded by typical cohort colleagues. My favorite must be the football coach played by Sean Patton. He is hilarious and over-the-top.
The bantering between the students and teachers is lightning-fast. The opening song of the first show brought back memories of constantly running to and from class. It was a fresh look at an age-old situation in these confusing modern times. Drag never looked so good among all the powderpuff players.
ENGLISH TEACHER is funny, poignant, and promises a more authentic society. I am proud of my teaching career, but happy I can be a fan from my comfy chair.
It is streaming on Hulu.
