ELLE is just what LEGALLY BLONDE fans need to watch this summer. It is a look back at how the infamous Elle Woods (originally played by Reese Witherspoon) got her fearless attitude, confidence, and pink wardrobe choices. It is pure escapism for summer entertainment. Predictable? Of course. Silly teenage angst? Definitely. Necessary? Hardly. Nevertheless, Lexi Minetree, as ELLE, captured the essence of why loyal audiences adored all the LB movies, the Broadway play, and the lucrative merch.
This series was created by Laura Kittrell (HIGH SCHOOL, INSECURE), who obviously has a thing for exploring those teenage years. It was a smart move to change locations. It gave more grit to the basic plot while taking a young ELLE out of her comfort zone. It showcased her values and instinctive sense of caring for others. Oh, don’t get me wrong. ELLE is still shallow at times, but her heart is always in the right place, and the writers even foreshadowed where she might wind up in her career choices.
ELLE is not rocket science, and I realize the critics’ opinions were not favorable. It was, however, perfectly cast with just the right amount of couture vs. hoodies. It concluded with a cute cliffhanger problem. This series is light and breezy, even with its snooty outlook on L.A. lifestyles. It promotes great advice for tweens and teens. What could be more fun while the world is dealing with raging temps, fires, and divisiveness? Wish we could see the world more often through pink-colored glasses.
