The Critics Choice Documentary Awards just announced their nominees for 2020, and CRIP CAMP is at the top of the list with the most nominations and deservedly so. CRIP CAMP covers the amazing summer of 1972 at Camp Jened, the very first summer camp of its kind for physically challenged teenagers. What is amazing about this doc is all of the film footage shot that summer, nearly 50 years ago, that captured a unique moment in time, yet was never publicly aired until now.
Exec-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, many of the kids from that summer went on, as adults, to spearhead the protests and the eventual passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. So Camp Jened was the nucleus of the equal right movement for disabled Americans! This touching and thoughtful doc gives us a look at our leaders to come. CRIP CAMP reminds us of the best that America can be.
It is available on Netflix.
