BALLARD is a spin-off of the popular BOSCH crime novel and TV series written by Michael Connelly. All the action takes place in Los Angeles, which adds another character layer to BALLARD’s case load. It is exciting and packed with intense moments. I ended up binge-watching all ten episodes, because they were all so intriguing and entertaining. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was taken by surprise during the final scenes. I hope it will be renewed.Â
Maggie Q was perfect for the title role. She portrayed a tough Detective who was flawed, working through past issues. Not everything ended the way she wanted, and that kept me fascinated with who she was at her core. I enjoyed the surfing sequences as well. Her home life created nuances and authentic details as well. BALLARD was the complete package. Her fight scenes were raw and rang true to life. The writers made sure she was fully developed. It was nicely done.Â
The ensemble surrounding BALLARD was top tier. They helped to balance the rocky road of closing criminal cases. Again, each supporting actor had issues to deal with in their own lives. Overall, the connecting sub-plots were compelling and thought-provoking. The team, the setbacks, and the everyday dialogues felt realistic. Nicely done.Â
BALLARD is a smart, tightly produced glimpse at solving homicides and getting the bad guy off the street in inventive ways. It brought to the surface how “LA is the city of lost souls,” filled with myriad emotions yearning to be seen.Â
BALLARD is streaming on Prime Video.
