Weekly Hidden Gem

Life’s not fair- never has been, never will be.  Terrific indie and low-budget films get overlooked in favor of mindless entertainment.  And sometimes, critics as a whole fail to appreciate a worthy larger budget movie because of biases common to critics.  The following weekly bite-size reviews shed light on hidden gems that have been forgotten or unjustly cast aside.

June 6th : Speed Racer (PG) – 2hrs 15mins

Speed Racer was, quite possibly, the biggest bomb of 2008.  Critics, turned off by the preponderance of CG and bright colors, dismissed it as children’s entertainment.  But Speed Racer’s sometimes intricate plotting and ample runtime render this assessment baseless.  Speed Racer does have spectacular action, but it isn’t the driving force of the film.  Instead, SR focuses on its characters and the relationships between them.  I’ve seen few movies with this much heart; cinema has rarely moved me like Speed Racer did.  The entire cast (Goodman, Sarandon, Ricci, etc) is fantastic, and Michael Giacchino once again proves why he’s one of the hottest composers in Hollywood.  Viewers willing to look beyond the candy coating will find a nourishing meal deeper within. 9.5/10
